The 18th century is a significant period in the intellectual history of Europe. During the century, Europe was baptized by "science and rationality" and began to move into "modern" society. Historically this period is known as the "Age of Enlightenment". In this critical moment of "abolishing the old and developing the new," Confucianism happened to be translated and introduced into Europe in large quantities. Confucius’ thoughts on humanity and sympathy were considered illuminating by the enlightenment thinkers, and even taken to be spiritual resource and reference for their religious, social and political reform. The workshop aims to explore the role and significance of Confucianism in the process of the transformation of world civilizations through discussion and dialogue among scholars.
